A computer virus is a program written to alter the way a computer operates, without the permission or knowledge of the user. Viruses can affect computers in ways that range from annoying but harmless (i.e. a silly message being displayed) to catastrophic (i.e. destruction of all information on a computer). Many viruses are received via email and are usually from spoofed email addresses.
